You play the character Squall. Squall is a loner and is not at ease with the world, plus he has a thorn in his side called Seifer. Seifer is basically his rival with a bad attitude and a problem with authority.

They are based in a futuristic world, which relies heavily on magic. Also they are students in a military unit for hire, called SeeD. SeeD headquarters is called Garden. There are two different Gardens in this world, Balamb Garden and Garbadia Garden. Also, the SeeD live on campus as do the students

Squall and Seifer are going on their final test with some other characters. The test consists of their being put in the middle of a full scale war and being judged on how well they cope with it. They all pass except Seifer and become full members of SeeD.

They get sent on their first mission where they are working for a 17 year old girl called Rinoa.

Rinoa wants Squall and his team to assassinate the leader of the powerful country Garbadia. To cut a long story short, they fail to kill him and a sorceress called Edea kills him instead. She is determined to take over Garbadia and Garbadias Garden. Not only that, but she has Seifer on her side, and has waged war on all SeeDs. So, Squall and SeeD are going to stop her and Seifer. In a fight to the death.
